discovery
This page is for setting related questions and submissions for things to flesh out the world building of the Crucible. Anything not firmly established on the setting page but could be something useful for common reference should go in here so that it can be referred to by everyone.
You don't need to vet every room/object/etc through this post so long as it makes sense to the setting. However, if you are unsure or want to establish something unique or would like context from the mod, please submit through the request form below.
Categories of Discovery
LocationsThis can be anything from a specific room within the Lonely Fortress, a building in the sunken village, or an isolated structure somewhere else in the Crucible. All structures within the setting reflect a pre-industrial lifestyle and architecture. Over time, some have been converted to fit a different purpose to fit the needs of the exiles using them. ObjectsAnything that would be native to the Crucible: plants, animals, supplies, weapons, etc. Keep in mind the availability of technology and materials limited to what is brought by exiles from more modern settings.
If you are looking for a specific item or something that would be considered a character token/trinkets, those sort of requests will only be available through night market events or redeeming favors submitted through bonus activity.KnowledgeA piece of the puzzle to broaden understanding. This covers: books, lore, hearsay, manners of instruction for development of practical and magical skill.

SEEKING – information on curing a servitor
WHAT DO YOU SEEK?: information on how to cure a servitor, whether that's some rite or ritual that must be completed or a physical (perhaps medicinal) cure
WHERE ARE YOU SEARCHING?: the library
no subject
The library contains a vast wealth of knowledge, mixed among gilded tomes lie dusty, unmarked journals of exiles past. It's difficult to discern where most of these books came from or if any of them might be of use to you.
After hours of digging, you are unable to find that any such rite or ritual has been recorded.
However, one such journal that comes across your desk theorizes that by starving the servitor may, in theory, force it to self-exorcise its host.
If physically bound to one location—indefinitely without a manner to sustain itself— shouldn't it seek out another with similar grievings to feed on?
What other knowledge doth Morfydd seek?

SEEKING - agnete's personal effects
WHAT DO YOU SEEK?: anything of agnete's that seem personal and like they might resonate with her / help reach out to her
WHERE ARE YOU SEARCHING?: the assembled items from Agnete's rooms

The hand that wears this ring gains the ability of the unshakable hold, unable to accidentally fumble or drop any items held within it.
A gold-plated coin with a jester's mask on one side and the caricature of a bear in a hat with the number '1' embezzled on it. An arcade token from another world.

seeking: something bad for him
WHAT DO YOU SEEK?: steve had a network post about trying to find some cigarettes and heard louis lost his. he wants those SPECIFICALLY, but he'd prob ask around and scrounge around for other alternatives. he prefers something he can smoke!!!
WHERE ARE YOU SEARCHING?: around the castle, but he is not brave enough to go into the underground tho that is TOO SPOOKY
no subject
When specifically asked about the tobacco cigarettes that Steve is used to, he is referred to wait for the Night Market that comes around from time to time. While he's not guaranteed to find what he's looking for, the chances then are higher than most.
When scrounging around for something to take the edge off, the resident exiles had a few alternatives to offer to Steve that have been processed from the plant life and resources available:
Processed similar to an herbal cigarette or cigarillo, this minty swamp weed provides a soothing, relaxing smoke that clears the lungs and provides an energetic pep.
An herbal cigarette with a sweet aroma made from a combination of spices like clove, cinnamon, and nutmeg rolled in mallow leaf. When smoked, it produces a satisfying headrush that temporarily numbs the throat and relieves pain.
Petals of lotus flowers wrapped tightly around one another and cured in a cigarillo-like fashion. When smoked, produces a pleasant drowsiness that calms the nerves and relaxes the body. When smoked often, it can lead to lapses in memory and a desire for idleness.
While not recommended for inhalation directly, the root of this plant is dried and mixed with other spices to burn as a type of incense that produces a mellowing calm, stimulating warmth in the chest and groin to arouse carnal appetites.
However, if smoked directly from a pipe, it can produce hallucinations, delirium, rapid heartbeat, and hypersexual mania.
SEEKING: restoratives
WHAT DO YOU SEEK?: Looking for what medicinal supplies are readily available to assist with healing injuries.
WHERE ARE YOU SEARCHING?: Consulting NPCs around the keep.
no subject
The infirmary is stocked with basic medicinal supplies for wounds, such as boiled linen bandages and common suturing materials (needle & thread). There does seem to be the lack of any official sort of 'surgery kit' available. Healers tending to larger wounds may rely on small knives for surgeries and garden tools for amputations.
When available, wound dressings can be soaked in wine or honey if it is available in the food pantry. Additionally, Mathilde's apothecary has whispermoss to slow the bleeding of open wounds and prevent infection.
Mathilde's apothecary also offers a small arrangement of medicines to relieve pain. Her offerings range from topical ointments made from other herbs like thornsap or arnica.
For more severe pain, she may offer distillate of valerian, which performs like morphine when ingested. Lotus or Feverweed tea may also be offered to help relieve more mild pain.
For injuries that need immediate healing, broken bones, or anything else that requires a significant time to heal, Mathilde may offer a coveted nibble of Sacred Nostrum: a flesh tasting bolus that is capable of speeding the healing processes up exponentially.
When taken, any open wounds or broken bones will stitch back together, however, the healing process is not immediate and will take longer depending on the severity of the damage. The process of feeling an injury stitch itself back together is incredibly painful. Multiple doses over the course of several days may need to be taken in order to heal larger injuries, but this is largely dependent on a person's pain tolerance.
Fully healed wounds may still show traces of a scar. The nostrum will not regrow missing limbs, cure diseases, or remove already healed scars.

SEEKING: history and significant figures of the crucible
WHAT DO YOU SEEK?: Quentin is searching for any information on what this place is, how it was made or how legend says it was made, and any significant figures that have gone before him. Journals, records, or even consistent histories that he can skim or get someone who can recognize any foreign alphabets to skim for him.
WHERE ARE YOU SEARCHING?: The library, initially skulking around and trying to avoid Siegfried out of pride and paranoia--but he'll ask for help if prompted, and will swarm anyone who helps with questions if they offer an assistace. Definitely sets up camp on a big table, definitely is making a mess.
no subject
Given the broad range, there is only so much Quentin can get his eyeballs on before he takes psychic damage for staring at words and bad handwriting too long.
Siegfried, while mildly impressed by Quentin's gumption to research, is largely unhelpful. He will point Quentin in a specific direction where he might find what he's looking for and will refuse to be bothered for the remainder of the period. Not entirely out of rudeness, but the scholar is preoccupied with a study of massive scrolls all over his personal desk. He's highly territorial and will let Quentin be on his side of the library as long as he doesn't touch anything in Siegfried's section.
The sources of information Quentin can dredge up are second-hand information at best and speculative at worst.
Ramblings from a Malodorous Pocket Journal, by an anonymous exile.
A journal, filled three-quarters of the way through, explores a theory that the Crucible is a rock swallowed by a massive interdimensional space amoeba (that could also be a whale or a serpent). What the exiles are experiencing is a result of everyone oscillating between various dimensions in a cosmic soup of digestive fluids that's slowly breaking down their essences until they are nothing but one with the great amoeba.
Notes on a Weeping Zealot, by Sister Gethwine.
A comprehensive summary of an interrogation of an unnamed captive from the Weeping Spire. A Catholic, Gethwine makes comparisons to the zealots' desire for purification, akin to that of achieving the holiness necessary to enter the joy of heaven. She surmises that since most exiles, when pressed to think thoroughly on the fragmented memories surrounding their arrival, recall dying in a dream, this must be their final judgement to be welcomed into the afterlife.
Annals of the Forgotten, compiled by Siegfried the Kindred Scholar.
An anthology of fragmented records from now lost documents penned by some of the Crucible's earliest recorded exiles. Tales here recount a time when the Lonely Fortress and the Weeping Spire were on more friendly terms until a crusade effectively severed alliances between the Sin Eaters and those who are otherwise just referred to as "Her Martyrs". It's noted that many records were destroyed or taken, leaving the record keepers to document what was shared to them by memory: the Crucible itself is more of a divine prison dreamed up by a mad god that exists both everywhere and nowhere. Its purpose is to quarantine those infected by the Sleeping One's influence.
Mystic Machina, by Gowyn of the Weave
An in-depth dissertation penned by a young artificer. The article claims that the magical makeup of the Crucible is actually a spirit trap. They go on to link the resonance with the Crucible's ever shifting reality, constant invasion of nascent spirits, and other manifestations to that of belonging to a portion of the Spirit Realm. They theorize that the Martyrs probably never originally intended to trap non-believers and possibly originally intended to utilize the Crucible to vet their own kind as some form of pilgrimage.
The Original Sin Eater, by Siegfried the Kindred Scholar.
Is a text that documents the origins of who created the Lonely Fortress, an unnamed mage who was likely among the first exiles. This mage, often referred to as the Curator, was able to mold and master the fabric of the world better than any other. The Curator's mastery of the Crucible's magic has been thoroughly documented and stored in this very library; however, these spells and grimoires are heavily protected through arcane locks and encryptions. If one can decipher the manner of the Curator's spells and rituals, arguably one can learn ways to augment one's own abilities within the Crucible.
SEEKING - a whisperwood adventure
WHAT DO YOU SEEK?: im late af but some time before the eclipse, Steve heckled Quentin into joining him for a cold adventure. they will be following Mathilde's instructions to leave the castle to find said creepy mushrooms. seeking a fun adventure with his bestie, the magic mushrooms that will hopefully lead to character development, and info about what might be out in the fog while they're wandering out there. Steve is particularly suspicious of anything that might be DBD coded. Quentin would like to seek for plants he might recognize, either for herbal remedy purposes or to do some drugs purposes. Their plan is to be good boys and be back by dark, though.
WHERE ARE YOU SEARCHING?: Whisperwood & the route there and back
no subject
The Whisperwood in its current state isn't much different than how it is described on the Setting page. A creepy ancient wood gnarled with roots and seeped in fog. Steve and Quentin can expect it to be eerily quiet. At times, it feels like they're being watched or followed. Normal feral woodland wildlife can be encountered as well as servitors wandering the fog.
HERBS DISCOVERED
Quentin is able to identify 3 potential plants similar to what can be found on Earth, however, none of them will turn out to be the plant in question or provide any pleasant side effects when ingested.
Consuming this plant will result in mild poisoning.
Consuming this plant will result in severe poisoning and a horrendous nightmare.
In fact, if consulted, the exile that works the kitchen will inform that's the weed Yorick uses for his "world famous" spinach soup.
LOCATION DISCOVERED [!]
Upon their wandering, they come across a cabin with smoke billowing out of its chimney. It smells like fresh bread and roast meat, inviting them inside if they dare take a peek. This little cottage resembles any hunter's lodge on earth; its owner has only just stepped away. Food is on the stove, fresh bread on the table. Linger here too long and the hunter returns, hostile at the intrusion of unwelcome visitors. Should Steve and Quentin be seen or attempt to interact, the hunter will attack and drive them off into the woods.
An item can be stolen from this location if one of them chooses to root around before the owner returns. Let me know if an attempt is made, and the item description will be provided.
ENTITY CLUES...??
There is nothing to be found that would definitively link the Crucible to the Entity or its sub-realms. However, Steve stumbles upon something of your choosing that reminds him of the realm he left. He may not be able to prove it has anything to do with DBD land...but he can pepe silvia about it.
[!] RANDOM EVENT
On the journey back to the Lonely Fortress, Steve and Quentin catch a glimpse of lights coming from the sunken village as the sky grows darker. At a distance, in the fog, it almost looks as though the village is thriving. As they get closer and the sky thickens with darkness, the illusion fades...leaving only dark ruins.

we are still chewin and deciding and will prob have them try and steal something from the cabin, but while we are percolating: did they manage to find the mushrooms for mathilde? i wasn't sure if i just missed it!

as for his "dbd" item, would a flashlight work? to everyone else that is just a flashlight but to him that is very fog coded.
if that would not work (like that should be reserved for night market), maybe finding a totem of some variety, even if it is not identical. he would NOT take it, if anything he'd break it, but it could also make him think of the realm while not necessarily meaning anything to anyone else.
